- <p> DIED. ROBERT C. MAYNARD, 56, pioneering black journalist and
- former editor, publisher and owner of the Oakland Tribune; of
- cancer; in Oakland, California. A high school dropout, Maynard
- rose high in the journalistic ranks, serving as a White House
- correspondent, ombudsman and editorial writer at the Washington
- Post. When he bought the Tribune in 1983, he became the first
- black owner of a major U.S. daily newspaper. Maynard wrote a
- nationally syndicated column and made frequent appearances on
- This Week with David Brinkley and The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour.
- He founded an institute that has helped to train hundreds of
- minority journalism students.
