  15. <p>     DIED. ROBERT C. MAYNARD, 56, pioneering black journalist and
  16. former editor, publisher and owner of the Oakland Tribune; of
  17. cancer; in Oakland, California. A high school dropout, Maynard
  18. rose high in the journalistic ranks, serving as a White House
  19. correspondent, ombudsman and editorial writer at the Washington
  20. Post. When he bought the Tribune in 1983, he became the first
  21. black owner of a major U.S. daily newspaper. Maynard wrote a
  22. nationally syndicated column and made frequent appearances on
  23. This Week with David Brinkley and The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour.
  24. He founded an institute that has helped to train hundreds of
  25. minority journalism students.
